Atop the backpack sits a USB NIC'd satellite dish. The bright blue blinking led was always more than enough to draw attention on its own, so I didn't see any reason not to throw the whole dish up there ( :

Anyone ever run into much opposition when doing anything of this sort? Curious glances are the most I've seen.

I use my Windows Mobile device (smal cellphone) and a bluetooth gps in my pocket. I never draw attention at all.

But with that antenna and large lcd screen I can see why you you get attention.

I highly recommend using a Toshiba Libretto in a very small backpack or waist pack when doing war walking. I have used a hockey-puck like GPS and all works pretty well. If you have the tools/money... a PC-104 build works nice, too.

I don't recommend using a Windows cell phone unless you are able to stay stealth. There are two needs for operational security (not being observed) when warXing (X = driving, walking, boating, etc):

1. Not to be too noticeable due to the equipment being carried
2. Not to be noticeable from the software/solution you use to perform the task, itself. In other words, stay stealth at all costs.

Depending on where you are (country, city, etc)... both pieces need to be carefully thought out.

This is just a safety recommendation for everyone.

Yup, same here an HTC touch running WiFiFoFum on WM6, and the bluetooth GPS in my coat pocket.

I've got into the habit of putting the radar screen up to watch as I wander about, unless you know the software and are looking right over my shoulder, it just looks like I'm reading an SMS or something. totally discrete.
