iPhone Wardriving (consolidated.db) == Big Numbers

Folks uploading the consolidated.db files from the computers that they sync their iOS4 iPhone/iPad/iPod devices to have lead to some wildly large numbers. We've seen 296,759 new wifi networks on April 27th, and 284,807 yesterday. See the Post File page for simple instructions on how to find and upload these files that are backed-up from iOS4 devices.

Can you explain to me how this works? Is this discovery of wifi/towers a built-in capability or do they have to have wigle installed as well?

we just have a parser for handling those files (the creation/management/etc of which is totally unrelated to wigle) that were created on the device and backed up.
