yup yup
teletronics 2.4 GHz 1 watt indoor amp with a Pacific Wireless 9dBi omni attached to it for _receiving_ in kismet.

ORiNOCO gold with a 12" pigtail-->amp-->4 feet of LMR400 ultraflex-->antenna
although 8 more dB gain on the receive side would be nice...

Also consider signal loss from connections, feed line.

.5 dB from each connector, and how many dB/foot from the feeder line to the antenna?

omni, man

get a big 'ol omni and mount that sucka out there. this would allow you to pick up in all directions. OR you could go with a yagi or parabolic and center in on the location of the AP (if that matters to you) or at least know what direction it is in...but you have to have someone move the antenna and...
