How can we improve GPS performance?

Looking at the stats, I see that everyone else has (like me) many networks discovered that we didn't have GPS info for. I started wardriving with a fairly nice Garmin GPS16, just a magnetic hockey puck with a power/serial connection. After it died, I started using a cheapie Garmin Etrex, which seems...

Assuming Linux, some variant on this will work: tar cfvz filename_to_upload.tar.gz *.xml *.csv *.gps This way you have one file to upload, and Wigle will keep the original names straight. This will of course tar.gz all filenames in the directory with .xml, .csv and .gps suffixes, so adjust filenames...

Nice hardware hack! Pigtails with tiny connectors can get a hard way to go in a vehicle. Where did you hook coax into the mini-PCI card?

Your setup would be good for a high-gain wardriving setup if you could get it running in a vehicle. We cannot advise you to steal your neighbors' bandwidth at home. That would be illegal. If broadband connections are unavailable to you, you might contact your neighbor and offer to chip in on his mon...

all good points. people will give you grief over number 2, because that involves using other operating systems. those arguments have gone on forever and always will. more people probably use Netstumbler, because more people use Windows. use whatever works for you. if you're starting out, you can do ...

log periodics are cool, they maintain gain and pattern across the widest bandspread of any antenna type. like, you know, a TV antenna....

as far as i know, all types of antennas are basically legal. exceptions might be if you are transmitting with it and you exceed maximum legal emissions or else uninformed local laws.

it's a tradeoff, on altitude vs. speed. since we are farther away than 'normal' range, you want as high gain of an antenna as possible. this makes a smaller and smaller 'cone of influence'. the one i was using's window is about 8 degrees by 10 degrees. the lower you are closer you are, and potential...

Warflying with Kismet

fun with warflying. i only had about 30 minutes to make a quick loop with it, and we were traveling pretty fast for a single antenna with an 8 degree slice of beamwidth. don't try this with anything that transmits! me: WOW, THOSE PEOPLE LOOK LIKE ANTS! pilot: those are ants, we haven't taken off yet.

i do not yet have an Atheros chipset card, but i desire to greatly. the possiblities of controlling the radio completely in software are very interesting to me.

i cannot recommend a receive preamp for 2.4 ghz, as i have no experience here.
