If you're bored I got a question I'm sure one of you wardrivers could answer with ease

I found a rouge AP in my network broadcasting Megahoc as the SSID. I loaded up netstumbler and walked around the complex until I found the AP.. It was an employees laptop that was broadcasting this SSID. What would cause a laptop to broadcast this SSID (when the user didn't configure it as an SSID)? What is this megahoc? I have searched the web and wigle is the only site with data on this "common" SSID. Can someone try and shed some light on this for me.. thanks

The laptop WiFi NIC is either configured for Adhoc mode, or running as a softAP.
(google "Wifi Adhoc mode" and "SoftAP" for more information).

The frightening thing is how many notebooks default to this behavior. I get about 10 each time I go out. possibly some are the same, but still higher than it needs to be. I think XP has file and printer sharing on by default too.

I believe megahoc refers to the Megatouch wireless network that lets the games communicate between themselves (and possibly the Internet).

Look here:

What is the adhoc used for? What kind of data?

they connect to the internet and share player data. high scores and averages are recorded and saved that way you can access your stats from any machine you play at

When i think mega touch I think the computer screen at the end of the bar where you drag the finger to play card games, trivia games, etc. Personally I am not a big fan of those devices, but I have heard that they actually have very good availability and continuity when it comes to their user interface and functionality. Do you all know if they are running http://www.neverfailgroup.com business continuity software from the head end or something to that effect. It would be interesting to know.
