"Residential Wi-Fi Mapping Database Revealed"

Found on Slashdot: Residential Wi-Fi Mapping Database Revealed pointing to an article: Enormous Database of Wifi Routers - Including Yours! - Revealed by AOL and Skyhook Announcement.

This will probably cause a number of extra visitors to wigle as wigle is mentioned a few times in the comments on slashdot.

Yes, wireless access-points can be mapped easily Both by weird hobbyists driving and biking around your neighbourhood and by Big Evil Greedy companies. Time for a warning sticker on all boxes of wireless equipment: "Wifi signals may reveal your location".

edit: and skyhook wireless has more locations (in the US and Canada) than wigle has worldwide!

WordPress
Error establishing a database connection

This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can't contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host's database server is down.

That would be really cool. If only I was in the US.

Could we perhaps dump another wifi scanning device in the car that also happens to be uploading to WiGLE at the same time? I wonder if they'd allow that, and I wonder what the terms and conditions are?

Skyhook got mention again the last few days because it is used by new features introduced by Apple in for example location services for the iPod and other Apple devices.

I guess skyhook keeps nagging me a bit (maybe because it aligns with some wild ideas I posted somewhere on this forum before).
