WTF Is Wrong With This Site

Talk about whatever

You know I can't understand how this site is so popular when I've been using it for 3 hours and nothing is working.

My uploads have been stuck forever:
20051204-00022 Waiting to Process #92 0 2005-12-04 17:30:21 20051204043708.ns1 10,799 0 0 0 0
20051204-00017 Waiting to Process #87 0 2005-12-04 16:04:08 20051204130030.ns1 126,844 0 0 0 0

When I click on "Personal Stats" it says "No user specified. You can Log In to view your own user page." So I login like it asks and then it just brings me right back to the login page, WTF.

Oh and the maps seem to be down. Is there any alternatives to this site out there?

Just some advice from one of the top wardrivers (#2) on this site: Please remain calm this is actually one of the only times this site has been into this maintenance mode. Realize it is for the better, and realize you aren't paying a service to tend to you hand and foot. If you don't want to post you don't have to. I am sure it is greatly appreciated by the WiGLE staff that you support their site, but seriously getting mad at them isn't the way to go. Everyone's uploads have been stuck for the last few days. It shall pass. Go wardrive some more.

The idea behind your users stats is that it is likely since you haven't uploaded anything that has been processed to the system that you frankly don't exist. I am sure the WiGLE staff can clear this up but it seems logical. Be patient. I am sure they aren't comfortable at all while this is happening.

As to alternatives you certainly will not find anything that comes close to the power of WiGLe. This, I can say for sure.

Thanks for the info. I guess I just need to be patient.

Hey is there any way to import ns1 files into Microsoft Streets & Trips? I know StumbVerter will do MapPoint but I don't have that. I also download an app called StreetStumbler2004 but when I import the file it doesn't do anything or give me the option to export to Streets & Trips format.

Thanks,

Chris

Unfortunately from my experience no. If you check out MapPoint's structure Streets and Trips is a more like a light version that does not support an API to attach and script to (such as stumbverter does to MapPoint). This is one reason there is such a difference in price. I did a google search for "StreetStumbler2004" with and without spaces and came up blank. I haven't heard of that application. To import data into S&T you have to massage the data enough so that the coordinates are correctly formatted and there is a name and etc. I've played with this a few times and wasn't satisfied either way. I rely heavily on WiGLE's webmaps - I tried using the java clients but not too happy with those either. I'm currently tinkering with writing my own windows client but no promises as to when that will be released.

Lately (as of last night) I released SuCKLE (beta) which I use on one of my systems to let me know how WiGLE is doing - like I just looked at the SuCKLE screen and it told me that the queue process is 94. I can keep an eye on the trend of uploads via the process queue in a timely fashion. I am expanding the tool as I type this so I'll trickle out features when they are ready.

I am constantly looking for new ways to make my wardriving experience better and more transparent so that I may share this with aspiring wardrivers and the like. I usually blog or post anything I find interesting on the relation to wardriving on my blog and sometimes here.

Here's the StreetStumbler site. http://home.adelphia.net/~kg4ixs/ss2004/

If you end up messing around with it let me know how it works out.

Ok here is an issue that you may have accidentally overlooked in their FAQ:
"Q. I cant get StreetStumbler to read my .NS1 files, what gives?
A. Try and Try as you may, StreetStumbler will NOT, I repeat, will NOT read .NS1 files. They are proprietary to NetStumbler. StreetStumbler was designed from the ground up to be able to use both full and summary EXPORTS of NetStumbler logs. Please consult NetStumbler on how to Export files."

This is not 100% true as marius released his NS1 file structure here:
http://www.stumbler.net/ns1files.html

... but that is neither here nor there in your situation. It looks like you have to export your ns1 file using netstumbler to summary export first before trying to use streetstumbler2004. Also it doesn't exactly explain that it works with Street and Trips 2005 or the more recent Streets and Trips 2006.

So try and export your NS1 to Summary using NetStumbler and give it another go. You may have better results. Check out the rest of their FAQ: such as regarding where the converted data is saved to! Keep us updated :)

I've written a parser for ns1 files. Provide the file specs for MS S&T and I'll give it a go.

Hi, not sure why I'm posting to such an old thread, other than to help others research this topic...

StreetStumbler works just fine on MS S&T (Microsoft Streets and Trips) 2006. In essence, what StreetStumbler does, is export your data into a CSV file, that can then be "imported" into s&T using the menus...

When you open a NetStumbler summary file in StreetStumbler, and it doesn't do anything, then there is something wrong with the file. I had this problem when using NS1 files generated in WiFiFoFum that I then opend in NetStumbler and did a summary export (WiFiFoFum works on my PDA/Phone but MiniStumbler doesn't but WiFiFoFum does save NS1 files if requested to do so) :) . If you open a correct file, your first hint that it's working is that you will get a summary of the information in the file as shown in the attached image.

As was pointed out, S&T is basically MapPoint minus some advanced features like Scripting support so, in S&T you can't "live" plot your WiFi Access points from NetStumbler, where as with MapPoint (and I belive Jiggle/Diggle also) you can, assuming you are running the correct script in netstumbler. I've also recently started working on achieving the same setup in linux using Kismet and GPS drive using expedia maps, but I haven't quite got it perfected yet, but once my car gets out of the shop, I think it will be ready, and I'll give it a go, and if there is any interest, I'll write a step by step including how to download your initial maps using the included perl scripts) on FC5... It was a LONG process getting all the required libraries, but most were obtainable via YUM, and the others atleast available via RPM (using obscure sources).

N-e-Ways, Sorry about bumping an old thread, but I figured someone could get use out of the info.
