Plotting my rise on WiGLE
So I just started using WiGLE today.
Wardrove to work; approximately 13 miles. 147 APs found; but I only had GPS lock on 66 of them.
First upload (of 66) put me on the map; page 28 of the user stats. Rank # 2729.
Wardrove about a 3 mile loop near work, 271 points. This boosted me to 338, moving me up to page 17, Rank # 1659.
I hope to catch most of the ones I missed GPS lock on this morning on my way home, and will probably pick up a bunch more.
It's even more fun now that I have a GPSr and someplace to share my findings!

Drove different route home from work. Got my total points up to 655, but missed a bunch that I had found without GPS lock. Moved up to page 14...smaller jump, but still happy.

Added 101 new points with GPS, 202 found total. Rank # 1199. I hope to break the top 10 pages by the end of the week!

Got out of bed with alarm instead of snoozing to wardrive. Found a freeware serial port replicator last night that creates virtual COM port to feed multiple apps. Tried it out with single card (on-board Dell), I don't think I was picking up as well as I should have. Scan speed also set to maxiumum, might have had something to do with it. Will try again tonight with multiple adapters - found a box full of unused WG111T's and WG111v2's at work!
Turned off COM splitter as I only had 1 wi-fi card. Came out with 117 new networks, pushing me to page 11 and rank # 1099 - 829/880 points w/GPS!

So I did my first 'official' multi-card drive this morning - using Windows and netstumbler - WITH GPS ON ALL THREE INSTANCES OF NETSTUMBLER!
I found a free virtual serial port emulator that split my COM1 GPS feed virtually on COM7. Set all instances of NS to COM7, and all three had co-ordinates!
I was using these adapters:
Driver-side window: Netgear WG111V2
Passengerside window: Netgear WG111T
Passenger seat (raised up on a box): Laptop internal Dell 1395
Here is what I found:
111v2: 227 networks
111T: 251 networks
Dell: 255 networks
Now, when I merge the files, I an aggregate total of 305 networks. This may be due to picking up different sides of the street, or being on different channels at the right time, but at any rate - it works GREAT!
305 Networks, 84 new. I'm gonna have to go out and do some dedicated grid-driving to get many more...if I can get permission from the wifey!
1013 APs w/GPS. 50 without. Gonna have to go slow and find those last 50.....

now, your next step is to upgrade that laptop to Debian and kismet, and that 305 will be 500+
And to get around the wifey thing, just leave the laptop in the car and turn it on whenever you drive somewhere. Thats how I get 85% of my points, if I'm in the car, the laptop is on.
I havent googled those WiFi cards, but do they have external antenna ports? A little mag mount goes a long way.

No, they're USB cards. If I had a serial to USB, I could Kismac with my Powerbook G4, but I don't have that critter. No spare monies at the moment either - we just had our second daughter born a month ago.

I hear that man, spare and money are mutually exclusive nowadays. The youngest of my 3 is 9 months old now, so most of my WD time is to/from work, and doctors, school events and all that.

That area has lots of potential. The thick swath through Northumberland's main street is me. I had a delivery to a business on 11 on the north side, and then went back into town and north west to a truck stop near 80.
You definitely need to go over to Hazelton, and at least drive through the parking lots of Home Depot, Walmart, and Penn State-Hazelton's campus. No one has touched that town at all. And drive through the lots of Walmart and Home Depot along 80. Look for hospitals, too. And the malls... !

Hahaha, no. It just means you're one of us "special people." I do plan to try and step up my searching and to really grid down Berwick pretty well with a buddy of mine.
Maybe I'll grab a spare HDD at work and push linux on it for my laptop - so that I can just swap drives to change OSes.
I can probably push all the way to 5 adapters, too - I think we have that many Negears unused at work. Bunch of Linksys stuff too, but they won't work as nice I don't think?

Kismet will let you run those all in 1 instance IIR, you just need to set the config up right. Set 3 locked to 1 channel (1, 6, and 11) and let the other 2 hop, and you'll be sittin pretty.
A side bonus, if you can crack one of the adapers apart, it may have an external antenna jack. I took one apart the other day to repair that my friend in a drunken stupor had stepped on and broken. It had hidden external antenna jacks on it that were just screaming to be used. Too bad he had managed to mangle the board beyond even my soldering skills, I would have liked to try it out. Cost him a nice $70 N adapter.

I wish I could, but these are ones that belong to work - so I can't really mod them at the moment.

I had pretty consistent problems with losing GPS lock while driving for years. Over 6 years, I had about 13,000 APs with no GPS. I went to a USB GPS instead of serial and have not had a single one without lock now.I hope to catch most of the ones I missed GPS lock on this morning on my way home, and will probably pick up a bunch more.
A decent external antenna on one NIC will also get you more than three USB ones in the car seat.
It wasn't that I lost lock; just that I left work and was moving at 35 mph with an OLD GPSr....it doesn't lock very fast, and it was foggy + cloudy which I'm sure didn't help; nor did trying to lock at that speed.
But I didn't want to be late for work because "I was waiting on my GPSr to lock on" - I don't think that would have gone over very well.
Side note - I'm also doing this on things I have or things I can "liberate" from work - even if only temporarily (extra wifi adapters).
