total newbie. uploaded some data after my very first wardrive..
(Mac Powerbook G4 + Airport Extreme + MacStumbler + TripNav
TN 200 GPS receiver). On the uploads page however,
I have a big 0 in the column
"Networks discovered with GPS". Total New locations are 15. However,
% Good locations is 0.

What gives ?

hrm.
the short answer is "it depends"

the long answer is more complicated. if you can send your upload id or filename to wigle-admin@wigle.net (or via the forum messaging) we can have a look at the file, but the most likely thing is that your stumble didn't turn up any new networks, and that the points fell out of the filtering and averaging that we do on the WiGLE servers.

if your stumble was somewhere brand new that dosen't show up already in WiGLE you may have uncovered a latent bug in one of our parsers, which we'd certainly like to fix. if you can send along your mac stumbler version as well, that would rule (occasionally some versions of some stumbling packages have logging issues).

oh wow.
yeah, if you could send us your macstumbler version i would really appreciate it. there are some seriously interesting values in the file :-)

MacStumbler Version 0.75b
I am pretty confident that I have stumbled into new networks,
based on the following info

a) the networks did not show up when I searched before I uploaded
the data (either by MAC ID or by name)
b) I downloaded JiGLE and in the latest mappack for the area,
most of the networks that I have discovered DO NOT show up
in the map.

The map itself is old (atleast 3 years), since the new communities
that have popped up since are not represented (there are roads
here now that are not there on that map)

HTH

The IDs are emailed to wigle-admin@wigle.net

yeah. its definately a parser issue (or stumbleware) not sure yet.

i do know that

W 3905.493896, N 7711.380371

are not normal gps coordinates. now just need to find out if we're broken, or if macstumbler is :-)

(and yes, to geeks watching at home, i know what the problem is. just need to find out who isn't doing their babylonian math)

okay, the changes are in production.
it was definately a parser error (on our side) on the plist exports from MacStumbler.

if you can repost your files, they should be picked up correctly.
if they aren't drop us another line.

I have re-posed the file this morning.
The results are not as I expected - although
a little bit of my ignorance of the process may be at work here...

After reposting,

Discovered Networks with GPS = 0
Total Discovered Networks = 0
Total Networks in File = 19
Good New Locations = 0
Total New Locations = 14
Percent Good Locations - 0.00

Is this right ? Should it not say that I found more than 0
locations with GPS ? And what about the % Good Locations ?

I keep forgetting to login when posting.. That Guest reply was mine..
(oops)

Postby uhtu » Wed Jan 28, 2004 4:35 pm

hmm.
i'll have another another look. the sexigesimal gps was definately what was screwing it up last night.

the "good locations" are ones not culled by our filtering algorithms.

ugh. there is more at work here than i thought.
sorry for the trouble. this one might take a bit to fix.
i'll post here when its working. and will thrash the QA organization soundly.

i've been soundly thrashed.

it turns out that when you're using subroutines, its important to read them first. sorry for all the confusion. it really should work now.

So should I repost the file ?

tia for all the hardwork and prompt response !!

Postby rajeevk » Wed Jan 28, 2004 7:32 pm

Better - I have reposted the file and here is what I get (and
my questions in parantheses)

Discovered Networks with GPS = 0 (WHY ?)
Total Discovered Networks = 0 (Why ?)
Total Networks in File = 19
Good New Locations = 12 (better)
Total New Locations = 14
Percent Good Locations - 85.714 (yeah!)

thx

Postby uhtu » Wed Jan 28, 2004 8:18 pm

okay. that i can answer.

the "why" answers are because it accepted the posts before, just didn't take the gps coordinates. so you were the discoverer, it just didn't know where you'd discovered them at.

i'm going to re-run your stats now, and that should pick up your credit. your accuracy %-age may be a bit wonky. but it will all work going forward. :-)

Postby rajeevk » Wed Jan 28, 2004 9:41 pm

so I goofed up and uploaded the data that did not
have the GPS coords. I got them when I drove back
from work... How do I "update" those locations ? (manually
using the Add Data thingy) or subsequent uploads just
"fill in" the blanks (going by MAC Adds) ?

How old are these topographical maps ? What's the procedure
to update them... ?

now I will shut up.. caused enough trouble aready...
