There used to be a website you could purchase an antennae and a pc/laptop card kit. The antennae had a magnetic base to mount on the car roof. I believe it was 12dB. This used to be sold on Wireless central. Wireless Central no longer exists. I believe it sold in the $150 -$165 range. It was a complete kit with pc card, antennae and cabling.

Hopefully, someone out there knows what I am talking about and can provide me with insight as to a website I can buy it from.

This isn't directly helpful since I don't know the kit you're speaking of or where to get it, but if you are interested in antennas, I know several wigle submitters get antennas and other things from http://fab-corp.com (Fleeman Anderson & Bird). I've personally ordered from them (antennas and pigtails) and I'm very happy with the stuff I got.

I also personally recommend and know others who would agree that the 'Engenius Senao' cards (200mW cards with external antenna jacks) are great cards in general and for stumbling. There's probably a link to other sites for them in the wigle or netstumbler boards, but:
http://keenansystems.com/store/engenius ... s-ext2.htm

is what I'm talking about. They take an MMCX connector/pigtail.

It's not the kit you're referring to, but you could easily pick up a card, a nice atenna w/ magmount, etc. for your price-point. Sorry for the long post if this isn't what you're looking for.

(the place I've been recommended for senao cards is http://www.netgate.com ... now this feels like an ad)

yeah. get this one. senao. 200 mW and a higher receive sensitivity than orinoco. it shows up as an orinoco/hermes chipset under linux and a prism2 in netstumbler.

everything mycroft said is right on the money. accept no substitutes. mycroft^TM hardware

all my hardware is fab-corp/netgate

Don't buy a Senao, buy an SMC2532-W card instead. Nearly identical to the Senao (200mW, very good receive sensitivity) for a lot lot cheaper. I've successfully gotten this card working in windows and linux without trouble. It's based on the prism 2.5 chipset. Use the wlan-ng drivers in linux.

ZipZoomFly.com has it for $60, free 2nd day shipping, and a 10 dollar rebate. So for $50, you've got an awesome card.

The card uses RP-MMCX connectors, which you can snag at http://www.fab-corp.com

Also, please post here if you find that 12dBi mag mount, I've been looking for it as well and haven't been able to find it.

check out www.hyperlinktech.com

I use a enterasys card with a external omni antenna. Works great!

I had a friend who had an SMC card burn up on him. I'm trying out a Demarc 300mW, and so far it's great! A bit on the spendy side though.

Hey, I haven't had this much fun since I hacked into the Star Trek game on a school district mainframe with a Model 33 back in 1976! It's amazing how many "linksys" and "default" and "MSHOME" accesspoints are sitting there just out of the box and plugged in with no WEP. I use a Uniden Evolo card with a NMO mount antenna from TESSCO (looks like a cellular antenna with two loops in it). I opened the card and routed one of the diversity antenna outputs to an antenna jack. Just don't touch the antenna - remember that microwave ovens use the same frequency as these things to cook stuff!

Your posing got me to their site and I ordered 2 mag-5db-omni's. Delivery was fast as anything [5 days to Switzerland] and the result is even better. I work with an original abg orinoco gold card and have mapped this city pretty well over the last 5 days [see my stats to see what I mean]. I always used my 'office' external antenna from lucent, a nice looking thingy.

Today I made my first ride with the mag-mounted antenna. A casual ride not going anywhere special: picked up 99[!!] new networks I'd not seen before.

So my vote goes to fab corp too: good prices, great shipment and excellent material.

Now let's see what happens when I get my gear from EtherDesigns.com

Cheers,
mokum

I agree, sharper concepts is great. They're a hyperlink reseller, but you get the same price without the minimum $100 order.
